Saree designs are different kinds of artistic creations done on sarees in order to beautify the sarees length-wise. Designs on Indian sarees can be made either in the form of beautiful motifs or different patterns all across the length of the saree. However, these are not only kinds of saree designs that are used; more options are decided based on other parameters as well.

Indian sarees come in different kinds of designs ranging from classy designs to fancy designs, from printed designs to pattern based designs, flashy designs to elegant designs. These combinations are made possible based on the decisions based on the kind of fabric chosen and kind of the work chosen to be done on the saree.

One of the factors deciding the saree designs is the saree fabric. Light weight saree fabrics use light weight materials for making saree designs; in comparison to the heavy weight sarees that may use elaborate designs on them. Lighter designs are spread sparingly all across the length of the saree, whereas, heavier designs are spread evenly all across the length. If possible more and more work is added on the base material to create sophisticated designs. Heavy designs cannot be chosen for light weight sarees as it may tear the fabric when worked on.

Another factor deciding the saree designs is keeping the occasion in mind. Sarees made for special occasions such as weddings, need to have heavy designs on them. Wedding sarees or bridal sarees have heavy jal work, butis, floral patterns on them. This work is still made heavier with tightly packed patterns and use of zerkin, sequins and zari wires. The patterns chosen are more sophisticated and intricate in comparison to other casual sarees. In contrast to wedding sarees designs, casual sarees designs are lighter designs. Light saree designs are made using different combinations of sequins, thread work, patch work, lace work or simple bead or pearl work.

Some saree designs are based on the equipments used to create the saree designs. ‘Kalamkari’ uses a pen to make saree designs. This includes flowers along with the stems and leaves. Preferably a ‘jal’ is created to cover the saree area. Screen printing saree uses different patterns and ideas like flowers, abstract patterns, and human images geometrical patterns and so on. Block printing sarees are made using wooden blocks with engraved designs. Block printing designs include flowers, human figures and some patterns which are basically inspired from the Gujrati culture.

Some other saree designs are limited by the kind of material used for making designs. Embroidery sarees of India use bright coloured threads of different qualities. Cotton threads, Resham threads or silk threads, and metallic threads are used for doing embroidery on the sarees. The hand embroidered sarees are comparatively expensive in comparison to the machine embroidered sarees.

Recently, saree designs are made keeping the latest kundan work in mind. Kundan includes semi-precious stones used to adorn sarees which impart a rich and affluent feel on wearing kundan sarees. Indian saree designers finalize saree designs by making informed decisions on these points. A latest trend in saree designing in India is catching up which involves making custom made sarees depending on the client’s personal demands.
