Is Lakme Fashion week better or isHDIL taking over the ramp scene?

Fashion week is a gourmet treat to the invitees. At least, that is what is started off as being. A novelty. A splendor of shows, paparazzi, celebrities and much, much more. When Lakme fashion week was first introduced in New Delhi in the millennium year, 2000 it was a raging success.

This success story paved way for the introduction of Lakme Fashion week with gusto and galore in Mumbai in the year 2001! And Viola, it created a stir, it created magic moments for the invitees who were seated in the magnificence of fantastic creations, sported by every conceivable, top model in the country walking the ramp in the Effervescence of the Taj Mahal Hotel. 44 designers showcased their ‘pret’ collections and the Lakme Finale was a grand success and this became the precedence for Fashion-Induction into Mumbai Society.

Fashion week became about being seen, being photographed as some of the perks of attending Lakme Fashion week but the most important was the designers having a creative-festival in their showcasing and the clothes were par-excellence. The clothes modeled were a window into the emotions and personalities of the designers.

Lakme Fashion week soon saw competition when HDIL, the real estate empire, took the ramp and fashion scene by storm by marching in, to the fashion world of India, by introducing a ‘hatke’ fashion week naming it HDIL India Couture week in the year 2008. Today HDIL India Couture week sees every conceivable star in Bollywood as part of their guest list

While Lakme Fashion week has Lara Dutta show stopping for her pal-designer or a Jayasuriya being a show-stopper at a fashion show and many more celebrity figures making their grand entrances at Lakme Fashion week, HDIL in a short span of two years has seen a turnout that is enviable. From Aamir Khan walking the ramp, when he does not get seen anywhere except for his movies practically, this past year saw Aamir Khan walk the ramp to support Salman Khan’s Cause and NGO called ‘Being Human’. Wow, what a turnout, what a show! Amrita Arora, pregnant with her baby-bump showing, was present in the audience sheering brother-in-law Salman Khan while he dashingly walked the ramp to represent ‘Being Human’.

It is no doubt that HDIL India Couture week has encompassed every fashion meter scale and rating in the country and is the King of fashion week in India. It does not take away from the fact that Lakme is superbly popular and one of the most innovative and stylish organizations in fashion and has an impressionable mark and recognition in the entire country and internationally as well. But as far as fashion week goes, the trump card belongs to HDIL!!!!    Lo Behold———Let’s witness the magic of HDIL this year as well as awaiting what new excitement they provide their audiences!!!

Clothes Define A Person- Myth or Reality?

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Clothes do define a person. Not a complete myth. Not a complete reality. The answer lies somewhere in between. For actors, their main job is to look good and presentable all the time; this makes the phrase ‘clothes define a person’ a reality of sorts. Today, with fashion shows embedded into the circuits of Mumbai and fashion channels providing exposure to the young and old, all the same and with the importance attached to Fashion Designers, clothes have become an intrinsic part of many a person’s life and lifestyle.

Actors get defined by how they look and what they wear. An actor like Kajol will be seated in the front row cheering on designer pal, Manish Malhotra at a fashion show because of the innate affiliation that every actor has with their favourite designer. Manish Malhotra is a striking example for being the candy-coloured designer of Bollywood, making colourful, happy, vibrant and stylish clothing for his leading ladies for movies and in personal life.

Aki Narula, being the head-stylist and designer for movie Kurbaan, is a big deal. The clothes for the movie were required to be demure, secretive, concealing and sleek.  When one read Aki Narula’s name in the credits, one would know that much importance is given to the designer of a movie. This is essential because clothes too, define a movie sometimes. Imagine if you have to watch Kajol in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’s first half of the movie, in un-fitted Salwars or Kurtas, it would have been a disaster. Her look in the first half of the movie, as Anjalie , was tom-boyish and Manish Malhotra designed the look to the tee. And it’s important to know the body type of each of the actors because only then can one do justice to dressing a star up- male or female.

In real life, people ape bollywood. For these people, a lot is about getting a look of their favourite star and this entails copying similar clothes and this would mean that clothes in certain extents define them as well. There are many socialites and many more who love to dress up in their favourite brand of clothing. Like, there are people who will only buy from certain stores because they feel that those brands compliment their physical attributes and provide a sense of comfortable confidence. These people give much importance and many marks to fashion-clothing. In many case, people do not care or bat an eyelid to their dressing sense and will be comfortabke in whatever they wear and do not have preferences, for these percentage of people, clothing defining them would be a myth and far from reality.

In conclusion, for many people, clothes define them to a large extent and to a percentage of people; clothes do not define them to any extent. Only clothes, however much there is obsession towards it, cannot be the single definitive factor in anyone’s life. Therefore, the article started by a mention of how clothes defining people lies in between a myth and reality.

Winter fashion

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

Be it a classy hair style or a car, vintage styles are in. There is one rule for winter fashion and it spells clearly as ‘comfort’. Indian winters are characterized as mild but the wind is quite a bother. Though style need not be compromised winter styles are certainly to ward off the winter blues. Use intelligent layered clothing and most branded items give you the best in recent colors and fabrics.

Dressing for a wedding need not be about shawls and stoles. Use the tweed suit in plain grey or silver to go over the sherwani or Chinese collared jacquard ethnic wear. The inners in thermal wear also come as good insulation and protection that is needed for the windy night parties. Use simple hair bands or pins to secure hair from the wind and also get into texturing the hair with special formulated winter shampoos.

Skin style is about ease and simplicity and the make up has to be based with a moisturizer. Use a neat lip gloss for the office chic look and do the hair up with a bun to go along with a stocking layered mini skirt in black or grey. Winters are a time to experiment with denims. Invest in good T shirts or inners resembling the ganji look. This is fantastic for teen collection with full sleeved polo shirts with flashy messages.

Use the stole-cum-dupatta as a winter accessory and leave it loose around the neck or cover the same artistically with half of it flowing around the shoulder. Bike jackets in orange, green and flashy shiny suede colors are still in this winter. Though a costly investment, this is a sure style accessory. Using thermal socks is also a good idea if you are getting into sneakers for your causal party.

There are spell binding styles in Indian embroided silks and woven woolen items. Use a casual poncho and a scarf which is hand embroided. Get some stuff from the locals in the hill stations and sew up a frock in knit variety. Woolen wear need not be layers of unmanageable stuff as there are neat options in thermal inners, jackets and soft cardigans.
