Author: admin‘NAUTANKI by Carina’ is the brainchild of Mumbai-based Fashion & Accessory Designer, Carina Advani and was founded on 9th of September, 2009 (09-09-09) to be exact.
Why did you choose ‘Fashion’ as a career?
I always had a passion for fashion but never really thought of pursuing it as a career until one of my closest friends insisted that I should give it a shot. And from there on out there was no looking back, I knew I found my calling. Like most girls fashion to me is sacred and I couldn’t be more grateful that I actually do this for a living. I love what I do and there’s no better feeling.
Tell us about your educational background?
After I completed my B.Com degree, I tried my hand at Graphic Design but it just wasn’t the right fit for me. I wanted to do something that was creatively more satisfying. I then went on to pursue Fashion & Accessory Designing which turned out to be the perfect career path for me. I’m also a certified Fashion Stylist and Consultant.
How did you start-off as an Accessory Designer?
To me Fashion has never been about just the clothes and ever since I decided to start my own label I knew I wanted to do everything from Apparel, Handbags, Shoes to Jewelry, it just so happened that I started with Handbags first but it was never planned that way. In fact the initial plan was to work with a fashion magazine as a stylist, I even went for an interview and got a job with a leading fashion magazine, but didn’t take it because that’s when it hit me that I want to do something of my own and maybe start my own brand. And here I am.
Why ‘NAUTANKI’?
Why not!?… I actually thought of a million names before I decided on this one. I wanted something different, something out of the ordinary and something that still somehow represents me and I think ‘NAUTANKI’ is just apt. I mean what’s life without a little drama, right?
Where do you retail?
I started supplying to stores in December of 2009 and ‘Creo’ in Mumbai was the first store I ever supplied to. Currently I’m supplying to various high-end designer stores in Mumbai and Pune.
Whats do you think is your best achievement?
Merely 9 days after I started supplying to stores, my designs were featured in Bombay Times which I think is my biggest achievement to date.
What are your future plans?
I’m currently designing handbags but I plan to diversify into shoes, jewelry and of course apparel.
