One can even paint a simple khadi kurti with designs, patterns and colours one wishes to be in. Special cuts in kurtas are now being experimented with. Dhoti

In previous article we talked about kurta. In the rural and semi-urban areas of India, kurta is often accompanied by dhoti. Dhoti kurta is the traditional Indian clothing of men. Dhoti is very unique in the sense that it is normally of 5 yards length and totally unstitched piece of cloth. Dhoti is tied around the waist and legs; however the knot is always tied around the waist. Dhoti kurta is particularly popular in north India whereas dhoti is used in almost all the parts of the country. It is known by many names in different regions. For example, we call it vesthi in Tamil Nadu and Malayalam, Dhotar in Marathi, Laacha in Punjab, Panche in Karnataka and Pancha in Andhra Pradesh. In southern states it is often worn with shirts or other piece of clothes whereas dhoti kurta is very popular in northern region.

 

There is a movement named Hare Krishna movement. The followers of this movement have made dhoti kurta heir dress code. Such is the popularity of this dress. Often the color worn by the followers are saffron and white color clothing. It is worn in the traditional style. Even the Father of The Nation, Mahatma Gandhi used to wear ethnic dress Pancha on several occasions. Other region with good number of people following this ethnic dress is west Bengal where it can be commonly seen during the festival of Durga Puja.

 

Angavastram is an unstitched piece of cloth draped over the shoulders. It is worn by south Indians with dhoti. It can also be used with a shirt known as chokka. Many people confuse dhoti with lungi but both are distinctly dissimilar. The difference is dhoti is uniquely ethnic whereas lungi is for informal occasions. Most of the cultural occasions in India give us a wonderful insight into importance of dhoti kurta.

Kurta refers to a long loose shirt and its length is just above or below the knees of the user.
